It is a worrying feature that… and hard to recognise when on the face of it it would seem to be nice usability terms of usability and human to human connectedness. But as you point out – the darker face of marketeering and possible surveillance is much more sinister, not to mention homogenisation of the Internet, lock in and other technically worrying aspects. I try to encourage all my friends to tread lightly in Facebook. Point all the outside content into it via RSS feeds, avoid loading content into it directly, and avoid using its communication tools and features. But that is easier said then done when so many people are not asking the harder questions about face book. There are lots of people out there that say the same about Google’s features, and that one is the one I choose to ignore. So I guess we just have to go along with it to some degree, and do the best we can among the 1 or 2 people we do manage to influence.

    Totally agree with you Leigh.

I try my best to avoid Facebook connections / contact preferring to keep it in the open like Twitter.

Seems and appears far more accountable and therefore sustainable.

As someone said to me once……what does the CIA’s facebook account look like ?

Answer : the same as everyone elses.
