Artist Statement

At the turn of the century, amidst all the beat-up about the world was going to collapse and the Internet was going to crash, I facilitated many classes of art students as a teacher at Thornlie Senior High School in Perth, Western Australia. It occurred to me that students were being taught to create linocut prints based on still life vases of flowers or objects set up in studio mode. Given the sheer boredom and behavioral disruptions that came from such boring subject matter, I introduced printmaking as a ‘portrait’ activity, and by example, I created prints by carving lino with the students themselves as my subject matter. The students in year 8 through to year 11 cottoned onto what I was doing and soon followed suit and we produced a range of linocut portraits, then at the end of the year exhibited these in the school as part of a whole group exhibition.
