Artist Statement

The Wellman Street Studios group including artist Doikao Pasilan, paper clay expert Graham Hay, Sofia Scorano, and Wendy McArthur all presented creative work in a joint exhibition held at the Blue Room Gallery in Perth, Western Australia. I was working part-time as an ATAS tutor through C.Y.O’Connor TAFE, part-time at Midland TAFE as an Arts lecturer and it was in the formative days of setting up the Swan City Youth Services aerosol art program. The works I brought forward were etchings and monoprints / mixed media depicting aspects of my visual mind’s eye musings over what I was hearing of the atrocities of the Benedictine monks in New Norcia who had by all reports (and I listened for years to Aboriginal families in the area to base this opinion) enslaved (contributed to having them removed them from their families) both Aboriginal boys as well diggers or agricultural workers as well as girls in the domiciliary or commercial kitchen roles. The titles of each work are important as they point to the awareness that was emerging in me as to the inequity and monarchical genocide that Aboriginal communities suffer right through to the present day.
