Abstract / Article
“… Local youth have been given a legal outlet for graffiti art by the Swan City Youth Service. The Swan City Youth Service is running an urban art project with Midland TAFE as part of the Certificate of General Education for adults offered at the youth centre on Morrison Road in Midland. At any given time the project has about 20 people aged 15 to 22 taking part. Artist and Educator, Alexander Hayes co-ordinates the ‘Learning Legends’ project, while graffiti artist Damien ‘Task’ Seery provides mentoring and advice to the project's participants. Hayes said the project encouraged participants to progress their art practice. It also gives them a legal space to display their graffiti art. Youth using the centre have painted the interior and exterior of the youth centre in various forms of art. Hayes said work spaces and experience placements were also being negotiated at Curtin University and Guildford Grammar. The youth service was also working with the Midland Redevelopment Authority and other youth centres to create public sculpture throughout the Midland cultural precinct.”.
