Abstract / Article

Maritime musings provide the bulk of the inspiration behind Gralyn Cellars' Aquatic Desire exhibition which opens at the winery at 2 pm today. "The theme of the festival of art, craft and fashion will conjure up feelings of passion related to the ocean," said coordinator Merilyn Hutton. Artists exhibiting include award-winning Bunbury sculptor Alexander Hayes who won last year's South West Survey and had a sellout exhibition at Gralyn on the October long weekend. He will have new three-dimensional pieces on display as well as prints and paintings. Hayes has combined his work with that of textile artist Kirsty Cox, who is a lecturer at Edith Cowan University. Cox's work includes painted and decorated screens, fashion design, and a variety of framed works. Helen O'Reilly, also a popular exhibitor at Gralyn, will show her sculptural ceramics. Large pieces featuring social comment are countered by equally intricate ceramic works relating to the Windy Harbour coast that echo the passionate colours and shapes of the ocean. Internationally acclaimed glass artist Alan Fox has prepared a number of new works for the Aquatic Desire show in a variety of colours featuring gold and silver leaf. Local jewellery designers Kath Lindann and Michael Hutton have fashioned gold and silver earrings, brooches, rings and necklaces to complement the exhibition. The exhibition preview for sponsors and artists will be held at 11 am this morning, followed by a lunch and a fashion parade coordinated by former Miss WA, Vicki Stanway. "We welcome the opportunity to promote high-quality local arts and crafts for interested business people who, through the purchase of works, provide strong support for this vital facet of our region,' Mrs Hutton said. Aquatic Desire will be open for two weeks. ‘A taste of Margaret River’ will also feature in the winery over Easter, with Barbara Maidment providing tastings of her range of mustards and dressings.
