Abstract
The New Practices in Flexible Learning ‘TxtMe: Supporting disengaged youth using Mobile Technologies’ project is funded by the Australian Flexible Learning Framework (AFLF), managed by Swan TAFE, Western Australia and conducted in conjunction with stakeholders Challenger TAFE, Swan City Youth Services (SCYS), WestOne Flex-e Learning Centre, and the Mandurah Senior College all in Western Australia. This project targets 15-19 year old students who have not previously succeeded in traditional classroom based learning, and examines the option of mobile learning (m-learning) for vocational education and training providers. The project recognises that mobile phone use has become a pervasive communication tool in youth culture. The project aims to create recommendations and guidelines for VET practitioners to use mobile communication technology to support a sustainable learning culture with disengaged youth. Specifically, the project seeks to find new ways to engage, retain and motivate lifelong learning skills with these young people.
