Tumblr

Artist Statement

We are living in an increasingly surveillant society, beset with the moral servitude of conservative institutions and corporations who wish to limit, reduce or remove personal expression form the World Wide Web. Notwithstanding, the Internet also provides the very worst of predatory and genocidal behaviours, manipulation of truths and destruction of cultural identities, none more so than anyone who identifies as a member of or acts in support of the LGBTQI community. The ‘Tumblr’ exhibition is a collection of ‘soft-core’ digital artefacts which I generated as I interacted with differing communities online, through mobile applications and in person across naturist and nudist communities. It is an expression of deep, dark secrets being brought to light, revealed in the human form and made seen through a series of creative acts, all reaching emancipation through the #realstory publication.

In 2013, Yahoo bought Tumblr for $1.1 billion yet wrote down much of Tumblr’s value with Verizon taking over Tumblr in 2017 when it acquired Yahoo and imposing stricter conditions and in 2018 shut down most sites containing nudity. Then, in 2019 Automattic, which owns WordPress, took over Tumblr for an undisclosed amount, ingested 200 staffers Automattic and the rest if history and the loss of millions of creative sites.
