The privileged rich have often been forged through the heartache belly of fire and poverty, and none more so than the convicts that landed on these shore onwards 223 years ago. Through a decade of frequenting the ‘Hills’ of Perth, Western Australia I soon learned of the complicit secrets of men of the aesthetic cut, cloth, and studio quarter. All with the usual foibles of the male dominion, the collision between what I was relationally engaged with as a Family member soon gave way to torment and tortured mind, as champagne cocktails regressed to rum and coke, dinner parties to raucous rambling BBQs and drunken fights. Amongst it all the fake mate colonial ocker piss-takes and put-downs, affectatious ‘love-you-darlings’ and lime green or gold vinyl belts holding up the bellies of upper-class high society poor. These woodcut prints were carved and editioned in 2000 as part of the outcomes for the Painting/Printmaking 392 unit at the School of Art, Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia.
