Artist Statement
With the official invitation from Simon Ambrose, Manager of the Midland Redevelopment Cultural Precinct, Western Australia I embarked on an ambitious plan to combine the outcomes of a ceramics unit with Geoff Lummis, through Edith Cowan University, Bunbury Campus with that of public artworks and supported community event - the Midland Bicentenary Celebrations. The onus of this project was public engagement with ‘re-envisioning’ Midland railway workshops and surroundings as a new residential development, a far cry and radically different from its beginnings as a toxic, coal-driven steam train workshop and repairs yard. The ensuing recording is a record of the interaction between the artist, AlexanderbHayes, and the public as he went about building forms from found and re-wound objects in the large grounds and property. The short film also captures some of the novice interactions between the artists and the audience, convenors, and facilitators as well as camera crew and events happening in real-time across the large workshop space. The mix of substrates and the genuine fragility of ceramics mixed amongst steel and timber with public access proved challenging.
