Artist Statement
No matter where you locate differing vernacular adaptations of the 44 gallon drum, many utilitarian and representational uses correlate this universal container with the personal concept of gender and political dimensions of ‘vessel’ as theme. Over a two year period, artists Alexander Hayes and Rob Muir of Perth, Western Australia created differing installations as part of public events, public ‘interventions’ and exhibitions exploring how this device connects in both traditional Australian folklore, contemporary representation as an art form, as well as the various manifestations in media over the last century. ‘Drums in the Outback’ hosted by TURA Events at Wogarno sheep station brought visitors in contact with ‘Project 44’ artworks on a 152 000 acre property, as did ‘Project 44 - Public Art Intervention’ where the artworks were situated in a clandestine manner at Claisebrook Inlet, East Perth.
