Excitement Abounds as the WASAs draw near. A record-breaking one hundred and fifty films have been entered this year. Four panels of judges now face the pleasurable but daunting task of deciding on the winners of 25 award categories and the 1999 WA "Young Filmmaker of the Year'. Twenty-six young hopefuls are in the running for the $5,000 available for 'Young Filmmaker of the Year’, which will be announced at the WASA Awards Night on Friday, July 16 at the Wool Pavilion, Claremont Showgrounds. Tickets for the Awards Night will be available from FT from the end of June. Triple J film man Pete Castaldi will host proceedings and WASA special guests Nadia Tass and David Wenham will be there to rub shoulders with WA's screen artists. Local band Delicatessen will provide filmic musical entertainment. WASA special guests include: NADIA TASS producer and director of the internationally acclaimed film Amy, along with Malcolm, Mr Reliable, Rikki & Pete and Pure Luck. Nadia also runs the Melbourne Film Studio, which has produced such hit Australian films as Muriel's Wedding, the Thin Red Line and Shine. PETE CASTALDI Triple J film critic and the festival director of a new Sydney Film Festival, which will be running in conjunction with 'sister' Italian Festival. DAVID WENHAM actor/producer. David is one of Australia's most popular and talented actors. Best known for his AFI 'Best Performance by an Actor' role in The Boys, David has also won the hearts of millions in his role opposite Sigrid Thornton as 'Diver Dan' in ABC-TV's Seachange. KELLI SIMPSON Sundance Film Festival winner. Director of Two Girls and a Baby. Also present will be interstate representatives from the Australian Film Institute (AF) and Australian Film Commission (AFC); ScreenWest; Mark Naglazas, film reviewer from the West Australian; and local directors and producers. Award winners will not only receive WASA statuettes designed by WA artist, Alexander Hayes, but also prizes including Kodak film stock; $1,000 worth of sound time at Double G; Luna passes, screen workshops with Annie Murtagh Monks, if Magazine subscriptions and script editing with the Australian Writers Guild.
