Abstract / Article

“… Guildford Grammar students have been learning some of the finer points of spray can art. Self taught artist “Task” Damien Seery spent a week helping senior students paint a mural in their art room. Art teacher Nick Allen said Task had been painting since he was 16 and was passionate about his work. Mr Allen said he invited Task to work with the students to create a mural on the theme of ‘hero’. "… While working with Task they were not only receiving personal tuition on specialised spray can techniques but also gaining valuable information about the pros and cons of being an artist in Perth and how an artist goes about working on a commissioned project," he said. "…Not to mention promoting the more positive aspects of a ‘socially suspect’ art form. The students have been working on separate boards using the same theme. Year 8 and 10 students have also taken part in spray can art projects. Mr Allen plans to hold an exhibition of students' work later in the term. He has invited artist and lecturer Alexander Hayes form the Justice and Equity Through Art (JETA) program at Curtin University an art to present a power-point display of graffiti artists that he has worked with around Perth and discuss the social and ethical implications of this art form.”
