Artists & the Environment

Author / Interviewer

Adrian Hayden

Abstract

“… Collaboratively we are committed to providing visual statements which enunciate our beliefs about the environment. Challenges to the pristine nature of our South West environment provided a beginning for our joint artistic endeavor. Our concern is that the environment is paramount to our existence and responsibility for its preservation lies with individuals. Our diverse mediums give visual clues that serve to educate the viewer. Our inspirations are derived from direct experience. The collective works of these artists can be seen at the Jalinda Gallery, Bunbury, Western Australia on Sunday the 19th of September from 12.30 pm. The exhibition, entitled ‘Triceptions’, is not to be missed.”

I chose photography as a medium to express my innermost feelings about the natural environment that surrounds us all. Too many of us choose to ignore the wonders that unite to form this living planet. Photography has enabled me to express to others how I perceive this magnificent abode we call Earth and hopefully touch on mankind's intuition to preserve what is left of our pristine world. Born: Stoke-on Trent, England. September 11. Involvements: Pacific Whale Foundation as a researcher interpreter; Westwhales as an active volunteer, Kanyana native animal rehabilitation.

My art is an emotional response to my immediate environment containing images expressed sometimes satirically or humorously. These images are derived from reflection on sensual and visual experiences that challenge conservative viewpoints. Studying art full-time from a primary education perspective provides me with a strong focus, conveyed through the use of limitless mediums. Born: Caringbah, N.S.W. Australia. Involvements: Edith Cowan University, Education Faculty, second-year art major; M.A.S.T. (Maths and Science Technologies) Secretary 1992-93; Elective Images Exhibition Feb 1993; Capel Art Fest. March 1991; South West Survey.

Personal visual interpretation of both experiences and philosophical beliefs provides me with an iconoclastic perspective. It is my intent to visually "prick the conscience" of the art viewer in order to bring about an altered understanding of their world. Printmaking provides me with a satisfying, 'polysensory medium to explore my ideas and feelings. My family, my teaching, and my art provide me with an exciting wonderfully happy life that translates to my art. Born: Manchester, England. September 11. Involvements: Westwhales committee member, active volunteer; Exhibitions Art Elective program; Bunbury campus Edith Cowan University; Impremiere 1990; Fibres, Forms, and Figures 1991; Fun Club. Bunbury City Art Galleries 1992; South West Survey 1993.
