Abstract / Article

The Biloela State High School recently held its annual "Week of Excellence". Students were able to extend their experiences with activities not normally included in the school curriculum. curriculum. This year Callide Coalfields supported two projects with monetary assistance for an artist in residence to work with the students on a permanent sculpture and also a one day workshop on Radioactivity and its use at Callide Coalfields. Artist/Sculptor Alexander Hayes spent 1 week at the school working on three scrap metal sculptures: "Man & Woman", "Bits & Pieces" and "Knights & Daze". The scrap metal was also donated by Callide Coalfields (thanks to Peter Thomasson for his work in arranging this). These works of art are available for all to see in the front garden at the High School. Ten students were involved in the Radioactivity Workshop where they learned about some of the more friendly uses of radioactivity, how radioactivity works and how to handle it in a safe manner.
