Abstract / Article

“… The ‘Ruby Red II’ is barely more than a skeleton at the moment, but when complete the floating fire sculpture will boast an ornate superstructure. ‘She'll come in mist, and there'll be quite elaborate decorative work on the top,’ Mr Sheridan said. Towers and a pagoda will loom in the haze, as drumming dragon boats escort the 15-metre tall craft across the waters of the Leschenault Inlet.

More than three weeks of intensive work has already gone into the sculpture and the whole thing is fated to go up in flames. The Ruby Red II will be put to the torch as a highlight of the March 6 fireworks spectacular. ‘We really hope we'll make something that doesn't happen anywhere else on a major scale.' Mr Sheridan said. 'Because we tipped the last one over, this is a rebirth of the first one’.

More than 7000 people were waiting on the foreshore last year when a wave from a passing launch toppled the original Ruby Red before It had a chance to blaze gloriously. Bunbury businesses have chipped in to sponsor the Red Ruby II, with the Commonwealth Bank winning a prize draw to add its name to the fire sculpture. The Aqua Spectacular, fromMarch 5 to 7, will include, non-stop dragon boat racing; speedboat, bicycle and sack races; fishing and sand castle building competitions; water and power skiing displays; sailing and milk carton regattas and a treasure hunt”.
