Abstract / Article

“… Alexander Hayes is a local artist living and working in Bunbury, Western Australia. Originally from Sydney, Australia Alexander migrated to the South West three years ago where he took up studies in education at Edith Cowan University. Hayes completed his studies in 1994 and has extended his exploration into the arts field through studies for the Associated Degree in Visual Arts. Alexander currently tutors children in art education workshops at the Bunbury Art Galleries. He has exhibited at many art exhibitions throughout the South West and in the South West Survey, where he was awarded the prize in Printmaking in 1994. ‘Significant Others’, a solo exhibition is the beginning of a personal exploration by the artist in his search to resolve a commitment to his art. It is an exploration of thoughts and perceptions through experiments with sculpture, prints and painting. The contiguous use of media accentuates a quirkiness and curious perspective of images reflecting significant events in the artist's life. Odd shapes and forms intrude and confront the viewer with an unsettling nature, that nevertheless still exudes a playful spirit. “
