Date/s

July 1996 - December 1996

Position

This was a tough (brilliantly awakening) assignment as I worked with three (3) Aboriginal Noongar families and four (4) children aged between 12 and 17 years of age supporting their academic skills program catering for their individual needs, to communicate outcomes via a complex reporting system and providing when required, reports on the child’s progress in both the schooling, home, and public social context. I worked closely with the Aboriginal & Islander Education Workers (AIEW), well as the education department Aboriginal Education Support Workers (AESW), classroom teachers, parents, and carers. Most of the academic tuition was delivered after school, between 4:00 pm and 5:30 pm which required carefully planning, co-teaching, and peer support or buddy systems to ensure success. This was the foundation position for my role later as an Education Officer, Protection Care Worker, and then Senior Education Officer at the Joondalup & Mirrabooka offices in Perth, Western Australia.

Outcomes

  • Engage with and co-design academic programs to suit child’s needs with Aboriginal co-workers;

  • Mentorship with significant adult carers, parents, and extended family support people;

  • Reporting on a daily, weekly, and as required basis to district Senior Education Officer;

  • Attendance at and provision of reports to court proceedings including truancy, grade, and funding continuation hearings.
