It seems as I plough through hundreds of hours transcribing these conversations with research Participants that as the Researcher the more I listen and reflect on what they are emphasizing in conversation, the more I better understand what is missing from their conversations.

In July 2016 the Nyikina community of Derby and Broome Western Australia gave me a Nyikina name during a smoking ceremony. I met with Jeannie Wabi, Senior Custodian of the Nyikina people of the Kimberley region in Western Australia.

This morning I awoke to a Facebook feed filled with vile hatred, misogyny, racial tensions, warmongering, fake affectations from disaffected singles seeking couples for swinging good times.

As a child, I took note of the bats that frequented Seaforth Park in Bexley, Sydney. I watched them fly in and out of the canopy of the huge old fig trees that were central to the park.

I have been angry for a week since recently returning from Broome to meet with my partner Magali McDuffie and her extended Family in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

The challenges for humanity or conversely the demise, will be the shutdown of the ‘humanities’ as is occurring across centres of academic excellence, faculties, schools, universities all around the world.

As I transcribe these conversations with research participants I am struck by how many individuals are speaking of corporations and government ‘scooping up data’ from ‘device users’ then creating a climate of fear to drive consumers back indoors to connect through devices and services which track, monitor and manipulate them in the guise as entertainment.

This poster was created to showcase my research investigation for the 2015 SCIT Engineering and Information Sciences Trade Showcase held on the 29th October 2015 at the Unicentre Hall ( Building 11) encompassing many faculties including Engineering and Information Sciences at the University of Wollongong.

We have become enmeshed in a soup of an Internet of Things and yet there, we are also chronically addicted to a virtual self that is mute and fixated on screens that have have had such convenience mixed with such social catastrophe.

A while back I made it public on FB that my cat died. That week I was bombarded with emails of pet death ads. Now I’m writing a story on broad-acre cropping IN A WORD DOCUMENT and have since had a few twitter feed emails in my inbox about “crops” and another two email adverts about “cropping”.

In a discussion with Professor Katina Michael by email on the 26th September 2015 I was struck by a comment Katina made regarding whether it is ethical to implement a lawful system ie. BWC repository irrespective of security or privacy concerns?

n 2015 I created and presented this poster at the 2015 HDR SCIT Research Showcase at the University of Wollongong, Australia. The poster provides a clear summary of the proposed outputs of the PhD thesis, by themes, associations and research focus.

Well here I sit contemplating what on earth life has next in store for me! Pending contractual confirmation I've been invited to lecture at the University of Wollongong in a second year unit - ISIT203 Social Informatics in the Workplace

So it’s early April 2015. I’m beginning the thesis writeup. Some say that it’s supposed to have started a long time prior but for me it’s taken a huge amount of thinking, reading, researching and generally “doing” out in the field and living life to get to this point.

The annual SCSSE & SISAT Trade Show and Research Showcase was held on the 30th October 2014 at the UniCentre Hall, University of Wollongong, NSW Australia.
